February is Black History Month. Here are two books every family should read. One is a picture book, the other a novel. Both books are for fourth grade and older.
From PINK AND SAY, this book quote: “To be born a slave is a heap o’ trouble, Say. But after Aylee taught me to read, even though he owned my person, I knew that nobody, ever, could really own me.”
Two boys find each other in the aftermath of battle, help each other and help us understand the cost of freedom.
From THE RIVER BETWEEN US, this book quote: “We never heart of Calinda again. I expect she prospered. She had all those talents, didn’t she? But we never heard. They had a brother too, remember. In Paris, France. But they were the free people of color. And after the war they had to find new selves. I suppose it was just better to cut their ties and go it alone. Think how many more there must be like them—perched very quiet up on people’s family trees. Safe from being called ugly names.”
"During the Civil War, the Pruitt family takes in two mysterious young ladies who have fled New Orleans to come north to Illinois." The story of a young boy's automobile trip with his father to visit a grandfather he has seldom seen. While there he discovers who he really is.
