Must post the Newbery and Caldecott winners before January is over. Waiting for the announcement and hoping I've read the winning titles and have them in the library is a kind of personal contest.
Yes for the Caldecott this year, no for the Newbery.
I was rooting for:
Better Luck Next Year!
"The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children."
From A SICK DAY FOR AMOS MCGEE, the Caldecott winner this year, this quote: “But one day---“Ah-choo!”---he woke up with the sniffles and the sneezes. Though he didn’t make it to the zoo that day, he did receive some unexpected guests.”
"Zookeeper Amos McGee, who is adored by all the animals, gets some unexpected guests while home sick one day."
"The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children."
From MOON OVER MANIFEST, the Newbery winner for this year, this book quote: “At the last car, I waited, listening the way I’d been taught—wait till the clack of the train wheels slows to the rhythm of your heartbeat. The trouble is my heart speeds up when I’m looking at the ground came rushing by. Finally, I saw a grassy spot and jumped. The ground came quick and hard, but I landed and rolled as the train lumbered on without a thank-you or goodbye.”
"Twelve year old Abilene Tucker is the daughter of a drifter who, in the summer of 1936, sends her to stay with an old friend in Manifest, Kansas, where he grew up, and where she hopes to find some things out about his past."
A Sick Day for Amos McGee is a perfect read for the day when your little one is having a sick day of their own and home from school. They might have a visitor or two too!
I'm on the waiting list for Moon Over Manifest, but I'm already in the story after reading the preview pages!
Almost without exception the Caldecott and Newbery winners are worthy of their award! Click on the links below to get a list of past award winners.
