" In a tiny village in the Swiss Alps, an angel meets an American Girl named Zola who has come with her father to open a school, and together Zola and the angel rescue a group of homeless orphans, who gradually change everything."
The book summary doesn't even begin to capture the magic of the angel, or Zola for that matter. A wonderful read aloud for your family. The angel has some trouble with language and her efforts to communicate are fanciful and humorous. Just listen to her voice:
"Peoples are strange! The things they are doing and saying--sometimes they make no sense. Did their brains fall out of their heads? And why so much saying, so much talking all the time day and night, all those words spilling out of those mouths? Why so much? Why don't they be quiet?"
&
"Poeples, why are they so complesive, no what is the word, propulsive, no, obsessive, yes obsessive! Why they are so obsessive about time, and why they think it is lake a cake you can divide into pieces, why? Why they have to have seconds, pinutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, sentries, and on and on . . .What they are thinking time is going somewhere?"
Sharon Creech is one of the authors I try to make sure every girl has read before they go to high school. There is so much in children's literature that is missed. We all want our children to read well and often and they can skip literature written for them (and for grandmas and for mothers) that will enrich their lives and their understanding of themselves and others. I've read most of her books. Some I've enjoyed more than others. Here are two more I treasure:
My little sister Phoebe gave me this book years ago. Didn't you Phoebe? Laurie and I and our mother all read it and I still remember the humor and the sorrow.
&
Remember that first boyfriend? Friend who was a boy? This Granny helps Rosie make sense of it all when her friend Bailey notices another girl.
I've never read Walk Two Moons, but I'm adding it to my list!
