Taking Liberty: The Story of Oney Judge, George Washington's Runaway Slave
"Oney Judge, having been a loyal servant to Martha Washington for twenty years, comes to the realization that she is just a slave and must decide if she will run away to find true freedom."
Ms. Rinaldi is a gifted writer who brings history to life in her work. Oney Judge was real and history is revealed in all its complexity in her story. Oney was a slave, and became loved and honored in her service to the Washingtons. But she was always a slave. When she runs away she gives up a life of comfort, position and luxury for one of poverty and struggle. Historical Fiction is the best way to understand history as it played out in the lives of the famous and the ordinary. There were no simple choices, every choice came with a cost. George Washington had no option to welcome Oney back as a free person, and Oney would return no other way. Each was bound by the times according to their choices.
This book is recommened for readers fifth grade and up.
